So, finally, we have bought our piece of jungle!!!  

The land is next to the Llanganates National Park. It is a 39 hectare plot with the National Park on one side (separated by a small strip of land).  The land next to us on the other side has just been purchased for a forest regeneration project – an ideal neighbor!

To give an idea of the size of the land, a hectare is 10000 metres squared or 2.471 acres (87.5 acres approx in total).

The area consists mainly of uncut trees (some are very large) and undergrowth, lots of small rivers and streams – it is at an altitude of about 1100 metres, so slightly higher than we were before. Due to the proximity to the National Park, there is lots of wildlife around – we haven’t even begun to identify how much!

There are no buildings or completed roads on the land so much development work is planned for the very near future.  The land is being purchased in two ‘packages’. Thanks to an anonymous donation of $25000, we have enough money to pay outright for 20 hectares, with an agreement to buy the remainder within two years at the same price ($600 per hectare). This leaves enough money to initiate the development of the site. We plan to utilize the small areas of land previously cleared for any building/enclosure location. In the near future, the perimeters will be marked out using a donation of locally grown indigenous hardwood trees – this fits with our plans to ensure that everything that we do here will be as environmentally friendly as possible.

Ya tenemos nuestro pedazo de bosque!!!

El terreno es una finca de 39 hectáreas que lindera con el Parque Nacional Llanganates (posiblemente haya un pequeño terreno entremedio). Otro terreno colindante con este ha sido adquirido para un proyecto de restauración de bosques –qué mejor vecino!

Para que se hagan una idea del tamaño del terreno, una hectárea son 10000 metros cuadrados igual a 2471 acres (aprox. 87,5 acres de terreno en total).

El área consiste mayoritariamente de árboles (algunos muy muy grandes) y numerosos ríos y riachuelos – está a una altitud de 1100 metros, un poco más alto de dónde trabajábamos antes. La contigüidad al Parque Nacional nos brinda la supervivencia de una gran variedad de especies de fauna y flora en el sector –todavía no hemos podido empezar a medir cuán grande es esta biodiversidad!

En el terreno no hay infraestructura ninguna, ni caminos de acceso, así que estamos planeando grandes proyectos de desarrollo en el futuro cercano. Hemos adquirido el terreno en dos “paquetes”. Gracias a una donación anónima de $25000, hemos podido comprar 20 hectáreas de inmediato y las 15 hectáreas restantes entran en una promesa que hemos firmado con el propietario para comprarlas en los próximos dos años al mismo precio ($600/ha). De esta manera aun nos queda suficiente dinero para empezar a desarrollar el proyecto. Planeamos construir en las zonas ya interferidas, y marcar nuestro perímetro usando donaciones de árboles nativos amenazados (reproducidos localmente) –queremos asegurar que el proyecto se desarrolle de la forma más ecológica posible.
