Rescued Tamarin Monkey - Chichico Rescatado

“The other day, while walking through our neighbourhood in Puyo I came across a little girl playing with a baby Saddle-back tamarin. To my surprise, after explaining to the girl’s family that it is illegal and difficult to have an animal like this in the house, they agreed that the best would be for it to be put into a group of its own kind in a protected area. We immediately arranged for it to be taken up to the Merazonia Rescue Centre, where it is currently going through quarantine. Once it is part of a group, it will then be returned to the wild area around the centre (next to Llanganates National Park –which is already home to several wild groups of tamarins).

This is the fourth saddle-back tamarin monkey I have found in this area in the past year, and these have all been lucky enough to go to Merazonia. Two of these four have already been released, and we have been informed that the other two will soon be at the same stage.

It’s always a big lift to our team when we are able to confiscate animals without using the police, and that some “owners” of these wild animals realise that the best option for these animals is for them to enter a program and eventually return to the wild. It is important to everyone involved in the work to see these small changes in mentality and keep us all positive about the welfare of the rich diversity of Ecuador.

Any animal confiscated by our team is reported to the Ministry of Environment and then is taken to a centre with the best options for the species confiscated. “ Glen Thompson

“El otro día, mientras caminaba por nuestro barrio en Puyo, me topé con una niña jugando con un mono bebé. Se trataba de un mono chichico de manto rojo. Sorprendentemente, después de una corta charla con la familia de la niña -para explicar que es difícil e ilegal tener un animal así en la casa- acordaron que lo mejor para el mono sería estar con los suyos en un área protegida. Inmediatamente organizamos transporte para reubicar el mono en el Centro de Rescate Merazonía, dónde en la actualidad está pasando la fase de cuarentena. Una vez que forme parte de un grupo, será liberado en un área natural alrededor del centro (al lado del Parque Nacional Llanganates – dónde se encuentran grupos silvestres de chichicos).

Es el cuarto chichico de manto rojo que encuentro en este sector en el transcurso de un año, y todos estos han tenido la suerte de ser reubicados a Merazonia.  Dos de los cuatro ya han sido liberados con éxito, y nos han informado que pronto los otros dos estarán en la misma fase.

Siempre es un buen día para nuestro equipo cuando logramos confiscar un animal sin acudir a la policía. Es una señal de que los “dueños” de animales silvestres se están dando cuenta de que los animales silvestres deben vivir libres en su hábitat. Es importante que las personas involucradas en este trabajo nos fijemos en estos cambios de actitud para poder seguir luchando para el bienestar de la vida silvestre de Ecuador.
