This rescue is definitely within our top ten most incredible rescue operations. Whilst enjoying an afternoon rock concert in front of the local Municipality (announcing the end of Carnaval in Puyo), a local friend pointed out a -not more than- three year old boy swinging around what looked like a newly born baby capuchin monkey. We asked the local Police for help, who immediately retained the family who owned the monkey, while they called for the Environmental Police to come and sort the situation out. The Environmental Police acted very efficiently, explaining that they were not allowed to have this monkey in their custody and that they were taking it to be placed within a centre that could look after it appropriately. The local family looked very sad to lose their son’s new toy, but accepted the situation, while some more ignorant civilians spent a long twenty minutes shouting at us that we should be more considerate and think about the poor little boy who was losing his toy (!). Once we had a chance to check the monkey, it was obvious that it was very young, probably in between two and three weeks of age, and very undernourished. Immediately we set off to buy the most appropriate milk for it, which he gulped down very enthusiastically, and we contacted some of our colleagues that have more experience with rearing such a young monkey.  Upon agreement with the local Environmental Police, the monkey was taken up to Merazonia Rescue Centre, where we have been informed it is progressing as it should be. Definitivamente este rescate está entre nuestros diez rescates más increíbles. Mientras disfrutábamos de un concierto de rock en frente el Municipio de Puyo (anunciando el fin del Carnaval), un amigo se dio cuenta de que un niño entre la multitud, de no más de unos tres años, cargaba un monito capuchino que parecía recién nacido. Enseguida pedimos ayuda a un agente de policía quien inmediatamente retuvo a la familia que llevaba el monito, mientras contactó con la Unidad de Protección del Medio Ambiente para que se presentaran a solucionar este problema. Los Policías del Medio Ambiente actuaron de manera muy eficiente, explicando a la familia que no es permitido tener a este animal de mascota y que iban a proceder a confiscarlo para llevarlo a un centro donde lo cuidarían de la forma más apropiada. Los miembros de la familia se entristecieron al darse cuenta que estaban a punto de perder el nuevo juguete de su hijo, pero aceptaron la situación. Por otro lado, varias otras personas se habían acercado a ver qué pasaba y algunos nos insultaban y gritaban que debíamos ser más considerados y pensar en el pobre niño que iba a perder su juguete (!). Una vez que pudimos chequear el monito, vimos que tal como habíamos pensado, era de muy joven edad –probablemente entre dos y tres semanas- y estaba muy malnutrido. De inmediato salimos a comprar una leche apropiada, la cual se tragó muy entusiásticamente, y contactamos con algunos de nuestros compañeros que tienen más experiencia en criar monos desde tan joven edad. Después de recibir los permisos pertinentes, el mono fue trasladado al Centro de Rescate Merazonia, dónde está progresando debidamente.
