Green Acouchy - Guatín (Myoprocta pratti)

"The jungle is her house" - "La selva es su casa"

Today we picked up a young female Green Acouchy (middle-sized rodent) that was handed in to our colleague Omar Tello, director of Jardín Botánico Las Orquídeas. Sadly the same story once again: someone gets pet wild animal, gets bored of it, and then hands it in. Immediately it was obvious to see that this small rodent -cousin of the more common Agouti- was extremely used to people and domestic environments. She has already been moved up to Merazonia Rescue Centre, with the relevant paperwork from the Ministry of Environment, and will have to go through the required period of quarantine prior integrating into a rehabilitation programme. I would like to add that when we went to fetch the acouchy from Omar’s house it was obvious that his daughter had become attached to the friendly rodent. Even so she immediately handed the acouchy to us, smiled and said “The jungle is her house”- A very encouraging phrase that will stay in our minds forever.

Hoy nuestro compañero Omar Tello, director del Jardín Botánico Las Orquídeas, nos entregó una Guatín hembra juvenil (roedor mediano). Tristemente la misma historia de siempre: alguien adquiere una mascota silvestre, se cansa y lo entrega. De inmediato era obvio que este pequeño roedor -primo de la más conocida Guatusa- estaba muy acostumbrada a las personas y los entornos domésticos. Ya ha sido reubicada en el Centro de Rescate Merazonía, con los permisos pertinentes del Ministerio del Ambiente, donde tendrá que pasar una fase de cuarentena antes de integrar al programa de rehabilitación. Quiero añadir que cuando fuimos a recoger la guatín de la casa de Omar, notamos que su hija se había encariñado con el dócil roedor. No obstante nos entregó enseguida la guatín, y sonrió diciendo: “La selva es su casa” – Una frase muy alentadora que permanecerá en nuestras mentes para siempre.
