Giant African Land Snail - Caracol Terrestre Gigante Africano

We have recently helped the Ministry to identify a new invasive species being sold to children outside school gates: Giant African Land Snail (Achatina fulica). A member from our Board of Directors confiscated two specimens from a local student, who said they were being sold and bought by the hundreds! We identified them with help from our colleagues at the CERFA Orchid and Botanical Garden (Jardín Botánico Las Orquídeas). This is the biggest species of land snail (can grow up to 30 centimetres long) and is known to be a very fast-growing predator able to damage ecosystems and tropical crops. The Ministry have already approached the issue, and it seems that they will do whatever’s in their reach to help control the spreading of this foreign species.

Recientemente ayudamos a identificar una nueva especie invasiva, siendo vendida a los estudiantes en la puerta de una escuela en Puyo: Caracol Terrestre Gigante Africano (Achatina fulica). Un miembro de nuestro Consejo Directivo confiscó dos especímenes a una estudiante local, quien comentó que se estaban vendiendo por centenares! Los identificamos con ayuda de nuestros amigos del Jardín Botánico Las Orquídeas. Esta especie es la más grande de los caracoles terrestres (puede medir hasta 30 centímetros de largo) y es conocido por ser un depredador de rápido crecimiento capaz de dañar ecosistemas y cosechas tropicales enteros. El Ministerio del Ambiente local han tomado en cuenta el asunto y han manifestado que harán todo lo que está a su alcance para controlar la expansión de esta especie invasiva.

We now have a recognised/registered charity based in the United Kingdom to support our future work here in Ecuador! It is called Flor de la Amazonia Group and its registered number is SC 040950.

There is a committed and supportive group of people over there who are planning to continue to support our work here in a number of ways. This includes fundraising, talking to other groups, schools, colleges and universities about our work, and planning to attract and support future volunteers. They have a website in preparation (www.flordelaamazonia.org ) and have a formed other networks including using twitter and facebook. They have just achieved recognition for tax purposes  and continue to develop the organisation. There is lots to do  and we wish them well and are very pleased to have their support – it means a great deal to know that there are others out there who believe in what we have done, and will continue to do, for the endangered animals, plants and environment of Ecuador!

Está dirigido por un grupo de personas muy entregadas quienes planean apoyar nuestro trabajo aquí, de varias maneras.
